Portal, Willcox

Day seven, the Chiricahua mountains, Willcox and back to Tucson.

Cave Creek Ranch:
Such a great place to stay! More great views of three or more BLUE-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS. BLUE GROSBEAK nearby. Thanks Reed! More at www.cavecreekranch.com.

Rodrigues (formerly Jasper) House, Foothills Rd, Portal:
WESTERN SCRUB-JAY, GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, female LAZULI BUNTING (nearly all gone, which seems a bit early). We missed Crissal Thrasher by a few minutes. Thanks Bob!

South Fork of Cave Creek:
Excellent views of a male ELEGANT TROGON beside the road. Noisy pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS overhead. ARIZONA WOODPECKER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, BROWN CREEPER, GRACE’S WARBLER, female LAZULI BUNTING.

Portal Road/Paradise Road:
Pair of MEXICAN CHICKADEES, YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS and a WILD TURKEY about 100 yards from FR 42 (the Portal road) along FR 42B (the Paradise road). I’ve long found this to be a reliable spot for the chickadees.

George Walker House:
What a place! JUNIPER TITMOUSE coming to the feeders, along with more great birds. Many thanks to Jackie and Winston. More at www.thegeorgewalkerhouse.com.

Onion Saddle:
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.

Willcox Twin Lakes (specifically, Lake Cochise):
We only had a short amount of time but among the shorebirds we managed to find five WILLETS, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and MARBLED GODWIT. The peep flock was distant so we drove round to see them, but they must have moved as we didn’t see them again. Ducks included LESSER SCAUP, RING-NECKED DUCK, NORTHERN SHOVELER and the TEAL trifecta. A small raft of EARED GREBES was a treat, a couple of BANK SWALLOWS flitted above the water and five RING-BILLED GULLS loafed on the shore. Numerous SCALED QUAIL were running around by the golf course entrance.
