La Posada Crane Tour

I had the pleasure of leading a crane tour for La Posada retirement community in Green Valley. We had a great day exploring the Sulphur Springs Valley and having fun on the bus. Along the way we saw things like WHITE-WINGED DOVE and LARK BUNTINGS.

Lake Cochise was surprisingly quiet, with very little to report. A few SANDHILL CRANES were in a field in the distance, but it was disappointing overall, so we moved on. Maybe the cool, overcast weather was a factor.

At Whitewater Draw, the SANDHILL CRANES were the main attraction, and a large group (a thousand or so) had congregated on the field next to the entrance road, for some good views in the scope. But, as they sometimes do, the cranes had a different agenda today, maybe due to the weather, and the huge flocks were not returning in the early afternoon as is usually the case. It wasn’t the spectacle we’d hoped for, but it was still good to see them, as always.

Also there, NORTHERN HARRIER, the flock of white geese (mostly SNOW GEESE, but they were never close enough to pick out any Ross’s for sure), a few CANVASBACK, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, several GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a small flock of LEAST SANDPIPERS, the GREAT HORNED OWL in the barn, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, HORNED LARK, and a vocal ROCK WREN.

Thanks to Susan and everyone at La Posada for an enjoyable trip, and hopefully we’ll do more in the future.
