Ash Canyon B&B, Carr Canyon

A splendid day in the Huachuca Mountains near Sierra Vista, with 79 species. The idiot that I am, I did something to my camera settings by mistake as I was at Carr Canyon, and ended up with no photos after that.

Sierra Vista:

SWAINSON’S HAWKS are now quite easy to find in the area.

Carr Canyon:

I would not have predicted lunchtime for an amazing birding experience at the Reef Townsite Campground, but this was probably my best ever visit to this site! The highlights were excellent views of GREATER PEWEE, at least 20 BUFF-BREASTED FLYCATCHERS, the most I’ve ever seen in one place, singing VIRGINIA’S and RED-FACED WARBLERS,

Also there, DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER, PLUMBEOUS VIREO, BROWN CREEPER, a latish RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, YELLOW-RUMPED, GRACE’S and BLACK-THROATED WARBLERS, PAINTED REDSTART, HEPATIC TANAGER,

A pair of WESTERN SCRUB-JAYS were about half way up the canyon. We stopped along the road at the bottom of the canyon, where the desert grassland habitat gave us INCA DOVE, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER atop one of the lowest sycamores, RUFOUS-WINGED SPARROW, PYRRHULOXIA.

Ash Canyon B&B:

Hands down the best feeding site in the Sierra Vista area, the birding was wonderful as ever. Highlights included stunning views of a male LUCIFER HUMMINGBIRD, as well as MAGNIFICENT, BLACK-CHINNED, ANNA’S, BROAD-TAILED and BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS, plus GREATER ROADRUNNER, four WOODPECKER species, RUFOUS-CROWNED, LARK and LINCOLN’S SPARROWS, scads of BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, beautiful SCOTT’S ORIOLES and CASSIN’S FINCH. It’s birding heaven! Thanks Mary Jo. www.ashcanyon.com

Miller Canyon:

A real treat, and a surprise at 3:00 p.m., three MONTEZUMA QUAIL were at the side of the road not far before the trailhead parking lot, giving us great looks.

A WHITE-EARED HUMMINGBIRD was at the feeders.
