Ash Canyon B&B Album

The home page for the B&B is: http://www.ashcanyonbandb.com/index.html Ash Canyon B&B is extremely easy to get to and offers excellent birding - especially for anyone looking for hummingbirds. Mary Jo Ballator is the owner of Ash Canyon B&B, she has the gates open to her yard from sun-up to sun-down on a daily basis. Her yard is truly an oasis in our desert. All photos on this and the following pages were taken with a Canon 20D using a Canon 100-400mm IS Lens.

Larry Smith's Oasis

Male_Lawrence_s_Goldfinch1.jpg

I visited Larry on the 18th and 20th of April. I was able to get a nice amount of our springtime birds. On the 10th of October in 2007 I paid my first visit to a new friends place. Larry lives less than a mile from me (as the crow flies). He has spent an enormous amount of time and energy making an oasis in his backyard. Larry has installed a large pond with a small river leading to it. He has planted trees, and shrubs to attract a wide variety of birds. I felt I was in a different different habitat while at his house. I was mainly concerned with getting views and pictures of two different birds on this afternoon - the Lawrence's Goldfinch and Lazuli Bunting. With Larry's generous help I succeeded in both areas.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Male_Costa_s_Hummer4.jpg

Boyce Thompson is located near the town of Superior, Arizona, outside of Phoenix. I went up on March 20, 2008 specifically to find a hybrid hummingbird. The weather and time of day wasn't the best for photography, but I did manage some pictures of the hybrid, some other hummingbirds, and some interesting plants. If anyone can ID the unknown hummingbirds please let me know.

Southwest Wings 2007

Scaled_Quail1.jpg

I was lucky to take a birding trip with Rick Wright during the Southwest Wings Birding Festival in August of 2007. Rick is an excellent guide and extremely knowledgeable not only with birds but also mammals of this area. Rick's web site is here: Aimophila Adventures
Unfortunately, rain (well floods really) prohibited us from finding our elusive bird (Five-striped Sparrow), but we had a great time nonetheless. I will also admit that the photos in this album are not up to my normal standard. However, I wanted a memory of the trip, so here they are.

I don't do a lot of birding when I visit my family back in Texas. This year I got out 3 times and was lucky to get a few decent shots.

7 viewsThe second place my brother and I birded was White Rock Lake in Dallas. We mainly went so I could show him the colony of Monk Parakeets. Monks build multichambered nests, often several feet high and weighing hundreds of pounds, that are the avian equivalent of apartment complexes. And while they live in tight communities – some monks mate for life – they allow other species of birds to nest and play with them.Jul 06, 2008
