Joe Corcoran and I spent the night in the Chiricahuas, at Cave Creek Ranch in Portal. Around the accommodation this morning we saw a showy PAINTED REDSTART, several BLUE-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, 30+ CEDAR WAXWINGS and 8 WHITE-WINGED DOVES. Many thanks to Reed for his usual kind hospitality.

After 45 minutes the SHORT-TAILED HAWK appeared. We got good views in flight and then watched as it folded its wings and stooped at full speed at a Northern Mockingbird, just missing its intended prey. We spent the next 20 minutes watching this rather beautiful little hawk. […]
