Today I had the pleasure of joining a family reunion with Richard, Ellen, Jim, Nancy and Barbara from all around the States. We birded the Huachucas.
At Beatty’s Guest Ranch in Miller Canyon we were treated to a fine selection of hummingbirds of seven species, including male and female CALLIOPE, male RUFOUS, plenty of MAGNIFICENT and in particular lots of BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS. We missed a Blue-throated which had arrived the previous day.
Up canyon was quiet. We didn’t go as far as the usual Spotted Owl haunts but Tom Snr told us he heard that one was present yesterday. However they haven’t settled into a pattern as of yet. We also struck out on the Flame-colored Tanager, which another birder told us was still present today in the same area as Sheri found it last week (around 100 yards up the trail from by Beatty’s back gate).
We visited our friend Mary Jo at Ash Canyon and were able to add another hummer to the list, a fine male LUCIFER HUMMINGBIRD which made a couple of visits. Both male and female CALLIOPE were also seen, as well as the usual array of eye-popping birds. The orioles were extremely popular. We were pleased to add a new species to Mary Jo’s ‘suet list’ when a NASHVILLE WARBLER made a couple of visits, joining dozens of YELLOW-RUMPEDS (which included at least one MYRTLE).
Many thanks to Tom and Mary Jo for their hospitality. It was another great day to be out and about in beautiful SE Arizona.
