Payson area

I spent two more days in Payson. I visited a variety of sites but it was a busy weekend so I spent much of my time trying to find places that weren’t inundated with RVs and pickup trucks.  The scenery was lovely though, so that was the main highlight of Sunday.

On Monday Melanie and I went back to the Pine Trailhead and enjoyed a very nice early morning hike. It was much more birdy than the previous visit. We encountered PYGMY, WHITE-BREASTED and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, PAINTED REDSTART, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, CORDILLERAN FLYCATCHER, SPOTTED TOWHEE, HAIRY WOODPECKER, HOUSE WREN and more.

It was good to feel what was probably the last cool weather we’d have for a while – at lunchtime we headed back to Tucson. As if to confirm our southward journey, at around 2:30 p.m. we saw two CRESTED CARACARAS flying over I-10 between the Red Rock exit and Picacho Peak.
