An epic Rarity Chase for the SW Wings Festival’s ‘Spring Fling’. 83 species with some big highlights.
Huachuca Canyon, mile 0 (Sinaloa Wren area):
The SINALOA WREN put on a good show at 7:00, popping up into a juniper for a while and scurrying around by the creek in the usual area, adjacent to the swing set in Camp Maricopa.
Also, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, DUSKY-CAPPED and BROWN CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, and SUMMER and WESTERN TANAGERS.
Huachuca Canyon, mile 1.7 and above:
Male ELEGANT TROGON just before the first dry creek crossing. Another calling before the second crossing.
My FOS pair of SULPHUR-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS just beyond the second creek crossing. Evidently there has been an early arrival of this species with reports from multiple locations.
BUFF BREASTED FLYCATCHERS in established territories, one by the dam, another 100 yards down canyon. One bird was collecting feathers from near the COOPER’S HAWK nest.
Excellent birding in general, with MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD, ARIZONA WOODPECKER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON’S THRUSH, BLACK-THROATED GRAY, TOWNSEND’S and WILSON’S WARBLERS, PAINTED REDSTART, CHIPPING and LINCOLN’S SPARROWS, HEPATIC, SUMMER and WESTERN TANAGERS, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and LAZULI BUNTING.
Patagonia Roadside Rest:
Continuing HARRIS’S SPARROW feeding quietly on the ground, beneath overhanging trees, not far from the southwestern entrance.
Pair of THICK-BILLED KINGBIRDS in the usual haunts around the picnic table.
Also, BLACK VULTURES, WHITE-THROATED SWIFT, WARBLING VIREO, and SUMMER TANAGER.
Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds, Patagonia:
VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRDS were the stars as we ate lunch and enjoyed the birds. The support included INCA DOVE, NORTHERN BEARDLESS-TYRANNULET, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, SUMMER TANAGER and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. Thanks Larry!
Blue Haven Road, Patagonia:
COSTA’S HUMMINGBIRD, NORTHERN BEARDLESS-TYRANNULET, SUMMER TANAGER, and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK.
Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve:
Five WILD TURKEYS seen from SR 82 southwest of Patagonia.
