Sky Islands Birding Cup

It was the 4th annual Sky Islands Birding Cup [1], a competition to see or hear the most species of birds in SE Arizona in 24 hours. Our team, this year called the Border Petrels, was made up of myself, Sara Pike, Tim Helentjaris and Jennie MacFarland. We were attempting to not finish second for the fourth year running!

Well, it was a long day, but we did well and finished on an impressive 162 species, equaling our previous best. But we were beaten into second again, once more defeated by Birding the Midnight Oil, the team from my friends at Adventure Birding (John Yerger, Keith Kamper and Jake Mohlmann), who hit 180 species.

It would take me forever to write it all up, so if you’re really interested in exactly what we saw and when, below you’ll find the output from the eBird checklists submitted by Jennie.
