SW Wings Rarity Chase

I led the Rarity Chase for the Southwest Wings Birding Festival, with a great group of birders. At the request of the group, we didn’t patronize Beatty’s Guest Ranch for possible White-eared Hummingbird, and nobody fancied the hike up for Rufous-capped Warbler at Hunter Canyon, so we plumped for Huachuca Canyon and a chase for the Sinaloa Wren.

However, we came up short and couldn’t find the wren in its regular spot, despite an extensive search. We had more luck up canyon, with several good views of ELEGANT TROGONS, including a pair mating, BUFF-BREASTED FLYCATCHER, and other typical birds of summer in the canyons.

An exceptionally showy BOTTERI’S SPARROW in the grasslands on the way out was popular with everyone.

We decided to visit Ramsey Canyon (we had permission as part of the festival, even though the preserve was closed) in an attempt to find a roosting Whiskered Screech-Owl in one of two known holes, but again we came up short. In the end we didn’t find any rarities, but it was still a rewarding day with good company.
