Yard Critters

I went out into the yard late this afternoon to enjoy the first monsoon rains, and found a couple of the more interesting creatures that I’m fortunate enough to share my yard with.

The first one I noticed was this REGAL HORNED LIZARD, just hunkered down on the patio. It appears to be a different individual than the one I photographed a couple of weeks ago [1], as it’s more the typical reddish color that I see around here, and it’s also got a missing or deformed ‘horn’, so I’ll be able to identify him again in the future. Seeing a couple of different individuals in a short space of time makes me feel justified in not doing anything about the many ant nests that are around the house. Sure, I get the odd ant bite, but the horny toads are happy!

The main reason I went outside was to move the dog bed and chair cushions under cover for the season. Under the dog bed I found another critter – I’m not so pleased to see these guys! I don’t mind them outside so much, and once I’d removed my little dog from the scene I was able to appreciate it for the special creature it was. But I do get a couple of scorpions inside the house each year, and have been stung once, so they do give me mixed feelings, to say the least!
