California Gulch Night Birding

I accompanied David Bradford and Brandon Percival and their group from Houston, in a quest to find night birds at California Gulch, the Buff-collared Nightjar being the main target.

California Gulch Rd:

A real bonus, we encountered a male MONTEZUMA QUAIL at the side of the road that stayed long enough for everyone to get great views.

Confluence of California Gulch and Warsaw Canyon:

We arrived a little before dark, just in time to get good views of FIVE-STRIPED SPARROW, another target bird for the group.

We waited patiently for vocalizations of nightjars, or a glimpse, but for the first time this year, I struck out and we couldn’t find them. It could have been because we were a big group, or maybe it was just bad luck. Either way, we got some consolation when we had excellent views of an ELF OWL, which was also new for the group’s list on their last night.
