Another nice morning of birding and photography in Peña Blanca Canyon with several of the sought-after species this beautiful canyon has to offer.

Peña Blanca Canyon:

They’ve been difficult lately, but a RUFOUS-CAPPED WARBLER popped up for us today and showed well.

The ELEGANT TROGONS seem to have calmed down a bit, but we still saw a couple of males.

We heard several MONTEZUMA QUAIL calling, and saw one flying through the oaks. We also encountered NORTHERN HARRIER, nesting ZONE-TAILED HAWKS, calling WHISKERED SCREECH-OWL, BLACK-CHINNED, COSTA’S, BROAD-TAILED and BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS, ARIZONA WOODPECKER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, HAMMOND’S, PACIFIC-SLOPE, DUSKY-CAPPED and ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS, WARBLING VIREO, BUSHTIT, ROCK and CANYON WRENS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, ORANGE-CROWNED, YELLOW-RUMPED and TOWNSEND’S WARBLERS, PAINTED REDSTART, GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE, HEPATIC TANAGER, LAZULI BUNTING, and HOODED and SCOTT’S ORIOLES.

White Rock Campground:

A quick stop at the bathrooms provided some relief as well as GRAY HAWK, BELL’S VIREO, LUCY’S WARBLER and RUFOUS-WINGED SPARROW.

I try to be a diligent guide and concentrate on getting my clients to see and photograph the birds before getting my own snapshots. Let’s face it, I’m not all that good at photography, as you can see above, but my client today, Jeff Carpenter, is an excellent photographer. These are some of the photos he got today, used with kind permission and © Jeff Carpenter. You can see more at Jeff’s website.
