I did my bit by taking part in the Tucson Bird Count again this year. It’s a really good, scientific survey that harnesses the power of citizen science. For the third year I did the same route through South Tucson, counting birds at busy intersections, vacant lots, rough neighborhoods, parking lots and shopping malls. When I heard I’d be leading two consecutive trips to Mt Lemmon for the Tucson Bird & Wildlife Festival, I was a little disappointed as I’d have preferred more variety. As it transpired, scorching temperatures in the lowlands meant that I was ultimately delighted to be taking the tour to high elevation with Scott Olmstead.
